Our Peer Support Specialists are individuals with lived experiences, which means that at one time or another they have been diagnosed with a substance use and or mental health disorder. Their role at Presbyterian is to listen without judgment and to respect our patients as they are. Peer specialists can serve many roles. They can be role models, coaches, guides or teachers, and even mentors.

Peer specialists serve individuals that come to the emergency department (ED) with an opioid overdose or a substance- or mental health-related episode. Patients and families can ask ED staff if a Peer Support Specialist is available to speak with them in person or virtually.
